Message by our Hon Secretary Carol de Lusignan:

Dear Oxonian,

The President and Committee of the Oxford Society of Belgium are pleased to announce that Juliette Bird, Head of Counter-Terrorism at NATO, has agreed to give us a talk entitled ‘From smells to spooks: an international journey’. It may not be as exciting as “Skyfall”, but none-the-less is a fascinating and important topic.

This talk will take place on Tuesday 18th June at our habitual venue, the conference room of the Eglise des Dominicains de Bruxelles, Avenue de la Renaissance, 40, 1000 Bruxelles (near Merode metro) and be followed by dinner in a local restaurant. The proceedings will begin at 7pm with a welcoming drink, the talk is scheduled to start around 7.30 and will be followed by questions and answers until 9pm. Attendance at the talk is free for subscribing members of the Society (€5 at the door for others), and you are welcome to bring a spouse or partner if you wish. You can choose whether or not to continue to the restaurant afterwards, the dinner normally comes in at about €35-40 per head including wine, details will follow nearer the time. Please reply to me by Thursday 13th indicating if you’re likely to be interested in coming to the dinner.

I look forward to greeting many of you for this, our last discussion of the summer season.

Best regards

Carol de Lusignan

Secretary, Oxford Society of Belgium

Follow-up Message by our Hon Secretary Carol de Lusignan, 10 June 2013:

Dear Oxonian,

I’d like to remind you that there is still time to register for our next speaker evening, when Juliette Bird, Head of Counter-Terrorism at NATO, will  give us a talk entitled ‘From smells to spooks: an international journey’. Dr Juliette Bird has been the head of NATO's Counter Terrorism section, within the Emerging Security Challenges Division, since September 2011.  In the course of a 20 year career in the UK foreign service she has specialised in global threats including proliferation, financial crime and, most extensively, terrorism.  She served in the UK's Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and was then seconded to NATO to set up an equivalent body for the Alliance.  Her work abroad has included postings to India, Belgium and the European Union. Her degrees are from Oxford University (Corpus Christi College), in chemistry. She is married with 2 children.

There’s no need to reply to this reminder if you’ve already registered, I will in any case be sending out a mail towards the end of this week to those on the guest list checking if they’re interested in dinner and giving the menu choices.

I look forward to greeting many of you for this, our last discussion of the summer season.

Also, don’t forget the Croquet Match on Sunday 23rd.  If you’re looking for a lift, or able to offer one, please use this link to help us organise transport for everyone: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1O5PeRwDK1Q_Ejx1MG9inun7y2utZHiysHhMiYiEDiK4/viewform
